Description

Bundled up in an oversized hoodie and soft knitted hat, you stride with crackling footsteps down the familiar orchard path that is now peppered with gold and scarlet leaves. The fruits have long been picked, and the air has grown crisp and satisfying. A golden hour perpetually hangs in the distant tree canopies where the leaves have changed and signalled the start of the spooky season. You curl your cold fingers around a thermos of mulled cider, giving a moment of thanks for the bountiful harvest. As you lean in to take a sip, you catch the alluring steam aroma of cinnamon spice and tangy sweet apple, the hallmark scent of autumn.

"Crisp autumn air kisses red apple orchards and cinnamon curls waft from wassail cups."

Folklore & Traditions

Allantide is celebrated on the 31st of October and the 1st of November much like Samhain in Ireland, Hollantide in Wales or Hallowe’en in Scotland. Along with the standard jack-o-lanterns carved from turnips, the apple features heavily in Cornish festivities. To give a shiny red apple to a friend will bring them good luck, and when placed under your pillow at night will show you a dream of your future betrothed. Festive games like Snap Apple might also be played. Instead of bobbing for apples in a bucket of water, the prizes are suspended from planks of wood adorned with lit candles, adding an element of risk into the mix. The celebrations mark the end of harvest, where apples will be turned into cyder for the winter’s spiced wassail.
