Description

Rows of ancient wooden bookshelves line the arched gallery of a candle-lit library in the heart of Amsterdam. In a leather armchair by the fire you've been absorbed in a medieval tome for hours, pouring over its illuminated parchment until only flickering red embers remain in the hearth. The crackling smoke scented with Oud, Mugwort and Myrrh spills forth from the chimney into the velvet darkness of the night sky. Along the row of crooked gothic houses of vermillion and ash-black brick, the obsidian canal waters glow with a golden patchwork of lamplight that drips like candied honey. The soft song of a nightingale wafts from the rustling leaves of an elm tree outside the library, which breaks your trance-like focus on the pages in your lap. You glance up at the ornate clock-face on the mantelpiece just as the brass hands strike midnight. You smile and close your weary eyes, and let the spirit of the night carry you into a beautiful dream.

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

Plants in the Artemisia family, like Mugwort and Wormwood, were once used in the production of absinthe or in smoking mixtures because of their mild hallucinogenic effect. Today, we know this was down to the fact the plants in this family can be extremely toxic when ingested. Mugwort, the safer species of the group, is associated with divination and dream work. Its aroma is earthy, sweet and musky, making it a wonderful aromatherapy oil and its fresh leaves make a hearty but slightly astringent, tea.
